Research Institute for Aging |
The Research Institute for Aging is a senate approved partnership between the University of Waterloo and RBJ Schlegel Holdings, Inc. Infrastructure for researchers is primarily at The Village of Winston Park, a continuum-of-care seniors' complex, but also at seven other facilities of Oakwood Retirement Communities Inc.
The mandate of the RIA is to carry out practical, applied research at the facility and community level, to improve care and overall quality of life for seniors.
This multi-disciplinary project studies the aging process within a continuum of older adults' accommodation and health care services and translates research to practical application by developing specific coping and caregiving strategies to promote quality of life.
The overall goal of the RIA is to enhance the care of seniors in both community-based an long-term care environments.
The specific objectives of the RIA:
1. develop a research knowledge base for effective/efficient/accessible health care in both community-based and long-term care environments;
2. translate research to practical training applications by developing specific coping and caregiving strategies to promote quality of life (i.e. independence and normalization);
3. provide staff training for enhanced caregiving and leadership development for effective management skills in older adults' accommodation and care;
4. provide education and training related to health and well being to older adults and their families to promote healthy aging;
5. develop innovative evidence-based programs and disseminate to the health care system and general population; and
6. provide a physical campus for independent and caregiving accommodation where residents are part of a voluntary living research environment. |
